Explanation of Meeting Space and Offices.

The symbolism of the yin yang in the dining table is carried on through the meeting space. As explained below it is representing the stark differences in external world that surrounds them but notes the similarity in their thinking and persistence to gain such power. Both office buildings of the two are in huge proportion to show the influence and power that they hold. However, the meeting spot in contrast, is small and the dining table intimate. This is to show that Jobs and Zhang may reflect different values and thinking, they both are equal in their earned prominence in the world.

For the office for Jobs I wanted to create a building that portrays power and influence, while also reflecting how it has achieved this. In a discussion with my tutor James I concluded that to portray the simplicity of the exterior in contrast with the complexity of the inde would be most effective. The building’s sleek and clean shape inspired by Apple Ipods. However, the old apple imac computers inspired the exterior of the blue transparent wall exposing the mechanical workings underneath.

For the office of Zhang I wanted to create a grand structure that represented a successful combination of modernism and authentic traditional Chinese design, without becoming to clichéd. Therefore, I decided to take the framework of traditional Chinese temples and manipulate it into box like structures, to portray the recycled paper that was turned into cardboard boxes to export Chinese goods. I textured the building in a white stone so as to add a modern approach, to reflet the thinking of Zhang. On top of the structure I placed a traditional Chinese temple roof to symbolise that Zhang may be moving in the direction of modern thought and success, her roots and the reason where she is today, is China.

The pathway in which the player will take has also been taken into consideration. the starting point is in the office of Jobs. the player then travels over the bridge to the Mac elevator. this takes the player uo to the meeting spot with the dining table. However, the elevator returns to the bottom which leaves you to take the only other option down - Zhang's elevator. This brings you to the meeting platform in position to continue toeards Zhang's office.

Two Draft UT Environments

Dining Table - Sketch Up

The reason I chose my dining table to take the form of the Chinese symbol - yin yang is because it represents two opposing and, at the same time, complementary aspects of any one phenomena. This forms the basis of my environment. East meets west. Zhang and her culture is immensely different to that of Jobs. However, despite this difference they have both achieved great power and wealth by their persistence, strength and ideas. In this way they are the same. This is shown further by the materials used in the table. One half is made of metal, representing Jobs and the other of wood, symbolizing Zhang. The different materials of the table are joined to form a small intimate meeting.

Jobs Elevator - Sketch Up

The elevator for Jobs is a reflection of a hollowed out Mac computer. This is seen in the clean, sleek cut lines of the elevator and the stark white color. This contrasts with the texture of the bridge leading from the office to the meeting platform which is a layered circular pattern. This represents the radical and modern approach apple is making on technology and the world.

Zhang Elevator - Sketch Up

The elevator for zhang was inspired by the shape and form and Chinese lanterns, similar to what you may see at Chinese New Year. The texture of the elevator is worth noting as when it was placed in UT the material was a bright yellow wire. This is to reflect the concept of recycling through waste paper bins that made Zhang’s career so powerful.
